WoMen in the History of Philosophy
Women have throughout the ages been interested in philosophy and practiced philosophy. Resent research shows that there have always been more women in philosophy than commonly assumed. They were often influential in their respective philosophical times and communities but their contributions were for the most part silenced in histories of philosophy. Feminine wisdom has also survived in symbolic and mythological figures and through oral transmissions, as well as in feminist thought within philosophical traditions. The diversity of styles and approaches women employed in their philosophical work require extending narrow notions of what counts as philosophy. Canons and curricula of philosophy are presently being extended and enriched due to greater awareness of women´s contributions to philosophical thought.
The Committee for Gender Issues will present a Calendar of Women Philosophers from all ages and all parts of the world at the World Congress in 2018. This will only be a small selection of women thinkers and wisdom figures given the many women of the past who have loved wisdom and done their share in pursuing it.
